The Bob Sphire Era

 

 

 

 

Coach Bob Sphire started the Lexington Catholic football program in 1991 and served fifteen years as the head coach.  During his tenure, the Knights compiled a record of 140 wins and 39 losses.   He led the Knights to the 2005 KHSAA 3A State Championship.  Other accomplishments include 2 undefeated regular seasons (2001 & 1998), 1 regional championship (2005), 6 regional finals and 6 district championships (2005, 2004, 2003, 2002, 2001 & 1998).  The Knights began district play in 1993 and never failed to make the KHSAA playoffs under his direction.  He was awarded statewide “Coach of the Year” recognition twice during his career (in 2001 by the Associated Press and in 1998 by his coaching peers in their annual voting to the Louisville Courier Journal).  He was also recognized by the Kentucky Football Coaches Association as the Class AAA, Region 3, District 6, “Coach of the Year” following the 2001 and 2002 seasons.  Among his many accomplishments, Coach Sphire helped send many young men to colleges all over the United States.  See Colleges 1991 – 2005.

In 2008, Coach Bob Sphire was inducted into the Lexington Catholic Athletic Hall Of Fame.
