BOYS RECAP:

Lexington Catholic junior Thomas Canary finished third to lead the Knights to a third-place team finish Saturday in the Class 2A state cross country championship at the Kentucky Horse Park.  Canary, who won the Class 2A Region 4 Championship last week in Wilmore, Ky., ran Saturday’s 5,000-meter course in a personal best time of 16 minutes, four seconds.  Five other Lexington Catholic runners also ran personal best times Saturday at the State meet: junior Logan Horrall (17:23), senior team captain Joe Fernandez (17:45), senior Bobby Martin (17:52), senior Kevin Melody (18:10), and senior Chris Haffler (18:47). Senior Lee Richardson (19:28) missed setting his personal best time by five seconds.

The Knights third-place team finish Saturday was LC’s best team-finish at the State meet since 1999, when the Knights finished runners-up. The 2007 team, however, equaled the 1999 squad’s average team time of 17:27. The Knights, who finished fourth as a team in the 2006 State meet, scored 154 points Saturday, only 29 points behind meet runners-up Pendleton County, and 89 points behind meet champion Owensboro Catholic, which won the Class 2A State title for the third-straight year.  The Knights also won the Class 2A Region 4 Championships last week at Asbury College. The Knights won the Region 4 Meet in 2005 and 2004, and were runners-up in 2006, 2003, 2002 and 2001.

Boys places of finish at State meet: Canary: 3; Horrall: 26: Fernandez: 44; Martin: 49; Melody 58; Haffler 104; Richardson 154.

GIRLS RECAP:

Lexington Catholic freshman Mallory Linton ran a personal best time of 20 minutes, 48 seconds to lead the Lady Knights to a 16th-place team finish Saturday at the Class 2A state cross country championship at the Kentucky Horse Park.  Linton, whose previous best time was 21:48, finished 30th in the 197-runnner field.  Three other Lexington Catholic runners also ran personal best times Saturday: junior Jennifer Greb (22:13), senior Sophie Yurkoski (22:21), and sophomore Chelsea Allen (22:49).  Junior Camille Mason posted a time of 23:15 and senior team captain Linsey Ward posted a time of 25:24.  Junior Leanne Little, who finished the regular season as the Knights number one runner and lead her team to second place last week at the Class 2A Region 4 Meet, did not finish because of illness.  Sophomore Mary Stewart Montague also qualified for the 2007 post season, but did not compete in Regions and State because of illness (coach’s decision). Montague ran her best time in 2007 (23:10) at the Lexington Catholic Invitational on Oct 13.

Girls places of finish at State Meet: Linton: 30; Greb: 93; Yurkoski: 98; Allen: 122; Mason: 133; Ward: 174; Little: dnf.

Regional Championship!

The boys placed first and the girls second in the Class 2A Region 4 Championships on Saturday, November 3rd.  Click here for results.

Coach Wiesehahn says that the regionals “ . . .were perhaps the most exciting I’ve seen as coach of Lexington Catholic cross country. (I’ve been the full-time coach since 2001.) It was a privilege and a thrill (and I am not talking about the water dousing I got) to be a part of. I was very proud and I didn’t want the day to end.”

Read Mark Maloney’ article this morning in the Lexington Herald-Leader at http://www.kentucky.com/312/story/221111.html

He also states “Did you know that since 2001, LC’s boys cross country team has either won (2007, 2005, 2004) or finished runners-up (2006, 2003, 2002, 2001) in class 2A Region 4? An outstanding accomplishment if you consider how many varsity runners graduate each year. That said, did you also know that since 2001, three individuals: Thomas Canary (2007), Megan Deaton (2005) and Lauren Arnold (2002, 2001) have won the Region Championship?”

LEXINGTON CATHOLIC INVITATIONAL

Saturday’s meet, which got big help from Linda Hay in awards, had eight races and 1,298 runners, including LC junior Thomas Canary, who finished third Saturday in the boys’ small-school varsity race.  Canary’s time of 16 minutes, 33 seconds for 5K (3.1 miles) was the fastest time posted by any Lexington Catholic runner since I became head coach in 2000, (Mark Noll ran 16:50 at State in 2002) and maybe the fastest since my teammate Jeff Moll  won the Class A State title in 1985.)  Nevertheless, Canary finished behind only Gordy Dooley of St. Henry, the defending meet and Class A State Meet Champion, and Willie Polio of Owensboro Catholic, State 2A runner-up. In short, he’s fast.

Canary’s LC team finished sixth in the 21-team field and were second among class 2A schools at the meet.  Except for Owensboro Catholic, LC’s team of Canary, Logan Horrall, Joe Fernandez, Bobby Martin, Kevin Melody, Chris Haffler and Lee Richardson beat every team Saturday they will face at the State meet on Nov. 10. Watch out Batman, the 2007 boys are coming for your 1999 State Runners-up title.

LC’s girls varsity team finished 12th among 24 teams Saturday in the girls’ small-school varsity race.
