Coast to coast: Nine schools — Christ the King, Piedmont, Chaminade-Julienne, ThunderRidge, Murry Bergtraum, Collins Hill, Dulles, Lexington Catholic and Mount Notre Dame — appeared in each of this season's rankings, including preseason.

 

Player of the week: Forward Anaris Sickles totaled 50 points and 34 rebounds in four games, earning MVP honors, as No. 6 Lexington Catholic won the Kentucky State Sweet Sixteen Tournament. Sickles scored 16 points and the go-ahead basket with less than a minute left in a 59-54 title-game victory against Clinton County (Albany). This season Sickles, a junior, averaged 10.7 points and 7.1 rebounds and shot 50.2% from the field.

 

Long distance: Super 25 guard Erika Arriaran of Norco (Calif.) won the Powerade Jam Fest three-point shootout Monday at the McDonald's All-American Game in South Bend, Ind. Arriaran, who has signed with Texas, topped Abby Waner of ThunderRidge (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) and Tiffanie Shives of Lansing (Mich.) Christian.

 

Retiring: Fred Corona, who has a 503-159 record in 25 years, is retiring from coaching and teaching at Mendham (N.J.). Corona's 1997-98 team went 32-0 and won the State Tournament of Champions.

 

Free throws: Senior guard-forward Lindsay Schrader of Bartlett was voted Illinois' Miss Basketball. Schrader, who averaged 22.1 points and 10.6 rebounds, has signed with Notre Dame. Candace Parker, USA TODAY's two-time player of the year, won the previous three Miss Basketball awards in Illinois. No. 4 Piedmont (Calif.) beat Brentwood (Los Angeles) 82-44 for its second consecutive Division IV state crown. The 38-point margin of victory was the largest in state final history.

1. Result: Won New York State Federation Class AA championship, beating then-No. 7 Murry Bergtraum (Manhattan) 66-59. Completed first undefeated season since 1998 and won first federation title since 2000.

2. Result: Won Class 4A state championship, its fourth consecutive. Became first team with four titles in row since state tournament was sanctioned in 1926.

4. Piedmont, Calif. (33-2)

4. Result: Won Division IV state championship, beating Brentwood (Los Angeles) 82-44 in final. The Paris twins, Ashley (2,617 points, 1,538 rebounds) and Courtney (3,484 points, 2,408 rebounds), combined for 6,101 points and 3,946 rebounds in four seasons.

6. Lexington (Ky.) Catholic (36-1)
