St. Ignatius:
St. Ignatius of Loyola was a Spanish knight born to a Basque noble family in 1491.  After he was wounded at the Battle of Pamplona in 1521, St. Ignatius underwent a spiritual conversion, abandoning his military life and devoting himself to labor for God.  In 1522, he experienced a vision of the Virgin Mary and the infant Jesus at the shrine of Our Lady of Montserrat and subsequently retreated to Manresa, where he prayed for seven hours a day.  St. Ignatius dedicated his life to serving other people and the Church.  He founded the Society of Jesus (Jesuits) and was its first Superior General.  St. Ignatius was beatified by Pope Paul V in 1609, canonized by Pope Gregory XV in 1622, and declared patron of all spiritual retreats by Pope Pius XI in 1922.  He is the patron saint of soldiers, the Society of Jesus, the Basque Country, and the provinces of Guipuzcoa and Biscay.

The Crest:
The St. Ignatius house crest features two crossing swords, representing strength, and the monogram for the Society of Jesuits, IHS,which means “To the greater glory of God.”
