Class Objective:

In this class, students will experience a general survey of literature from various times, places, and genres.  Students will read, understand, and appreciate this literature and will practice and develop academic writing and critical thinking skills.

Textbook:

Prentice Hall Literature: Timeless Voices, Timeless Themes.  Gold Level.

Required Materials:

Each student must purchase a 3-ring binder for literature class and bring this binder, the textbook, the student agenda, lined paper, and a pen or pencil to class every day.  For certain lessons and activities, students will need to bring A Writer’s Reference; I will give notice for those days.  Throughout the school year, students will be required to acquire or purchase assigned novels.  During those units, students can leave their textbooks in their lockers and must bring their novels to class every day.  I will provide more information and plenty of notice at those times.

Grading:

Writing grade…………………………………………………………………..40%

(including rough draft, revising, and final draft grades)

Classwork and homework grade………………………………………………45%

(including quizzes, tests, and one Cornell note-taking grade per term)

Word Study grade………………………………………………………………5%

(including credit for Days 1,2,3,5 and Test grades every four weeks)

Exam…………………………………………………………………………..10%

     (Semester Exam and Final Exam)

Make-up and Late Work:

In the event of an excused absence from school, students are responsible for coming to me to ask about any missed work and they will have only one week to submit make-up work for credit.  Students cannot make up any missed work for an unexcused absence.  If a student turns in an assignment after its set deadline, the grade will suffer a deduction for each school day past the deadline. After a certain time past the deadline, I will no longer accept late work.  For major assignments, I will usually grant extensions to students who ask me at least two days before the deadline.

Punctuality:

Students are expected to be in the classroom and seated in their desks when the bell rings for class.  If students have a legitimate reason for being late to class, they must present a signed note, excusing their tardiness.  Students with unexcused tardies will face consequences.

Classroom Behavior:

Students are expected to know and follow all rules set forth by Lexington Catholic High School in the student agenda, and abide by all policies stated on this sheet.  In my classroom, especially, I will enforce all rules that promote respect.  In the case of any violation of school rules or classroom policy, I will issue a verbal warning and ask the student to write his or her name on the board.  In the case of a second violation, I will issue an after-school detention, to be served with me in room 30.  In the case of a third violation, I will issue a school detention (to be served before school) and I will call the parents to discuss the student’s behavior.  At each new term, I give all students a clean start.

Sample list of violations:

      Improper dress code

      Tardy to class

      Lack of class materials

Sleeping or head down in class

Food or drink in the classroom

      Disruptive talking
