Overview:
Who is Jesus of Nazareth, the person people of faith call “the Christ, the Son of God”? This important question is the subject of this course. Answering the question will require a perusal of the gospels and their portrayal of Jesus. Also, we will examine what the Catholic Church believes about this compelling person and discuss how we can meet Jesus today.
The New Testament is a major part of the most-read and most important book of all times. As a major foundation of Western civilization, it is important to better understand how all Christian denominations are based on the foundations of the Old and New Testaments. As the recorded history of our faith, it is important that we gain a better understanding of how the New Testament grew out of the Old Testament and impacts our faith today. This course will focus on the Historical-Critical method of biblical interpretation as endorsed by the Second Vatican Council. Basic background information of the growth of the Christian Scriptures—historical context, methods of exegesis, and examination of various criticism techniques will be studied. It is my goal that each student leaves this class with a deeper appreciation and understanding of the Word of God.
