Lexington Catholic High School has been named a 2007 NCLB Blue Ribbon School by the U.S. Department of Education

Lexington, KY – In a press release from Secretary of Education Margaret Spellings, Lexington Catholic has been named a 2007 No Child Left Behind—Blue Ribbon School.  The program began in 1982 by the U. S. Department of Education to recognize schools for academic achievement.  In 2003 the program was revised and renamed the “No Child Left Behind Blue Ribbon Schools” award.

The Blue Ribbon Schools program recognizes public and private schools for academic superiority or dramatic gains in student achievement. Lexington Catholic scored in the top ten percent in the nation of the ACT standardized test making the school eligible to apply for the program.

The Council for American Private Education (CAPE) submits only 50 private schools to the Secretary of Education for consideration of this award.  287 schools nationwide were chosen for Blue Ribbon status for 2007, 11 of which were from the state of Kentucky.  Of those 287, 40 were high schools and only 3 were non-public high schools.  No high school in Kentucky has won the award since 2003, however this year, 3 were selected.  Lexington Catholic is the first high school in Fayette County to ever win the award.

Lexington Catholic will host an official celebration on November 16th after school officials return from the awards ceremony in Washington, D.C.

Principal Sally Stevens: “We are truly honored to receive this award.  Blue Ribbon School status is earned by all of our teachers who have worked for the last ten years strengthening our curriculum and instruction for our students.  I cannot be more proud of our accomplishments.  The hard work and dedication that goes into a quality academic climate rarely gets the recognition it deserves. Today that happened to us. “
